Yep, you read that right - My boyfriend and I are off to the land of Hello Kitty, masterful sushi and crazy anime; JAPAN! I really can't wait, and although I still have so much to do before we go, I wanted to start sharing my excitement!
Japan has been on both of our "life goals" list for as long as we can remember. My love of Japanese culture started with Final Fantasy on the Playstation, and has evolved through anime, manga, kawaii stationery, minimalist design principles and a love for veggie ramen over the years. Sheff (my other half) has loved martial arts films, samurai, the Buddhist way of life, Godzilla, anime and arcade games (Katamari anyone?!) forever. So Japan is absolutely the place we had to go!
When we booked our flights, I wanted to mark the occasion of our dream becoming a reality - so I decided to contact model artist Mabel Low to commission custom chibis of me and Sheff!
I discovered Mabel through her wonderful Instagram feed. She is a Malaysia based artist who makes some of the cutest little clay chibi charms I have ever seen! When I got in touch with her she was so lovely, and was happy to help me work out the cost and postage for a UK order. I was amazed that it would cost under £30 for two custom chibis including shipping so I immediately moved forward with the order.
Mabel used photos of me and Sheff along with reference images I sent her from Google to create chibi sketches from my brief. I wanted to have Sheff and myself in traditional Japanese clothing and Mabel suggested little details like a samurai sword for sheff and a Kimono Obi for me to make them even more unique.
The sketches were so cute, and I approved them straight away so that Mabel could move on to the clay work. When I saw the end result I was so happy! She even got Sheff's little hair quiff in there!
Shipping was super fast and came packaged securely in a pretty box. I am going to use our mini-me chibis to decorate a garland of photos from our trip after we have been :)
I am so delighted with my chibis and I would absolutely recommend Mabel and her wonderful work if you are looking for unique gifts - or even a cute treat for yourself! Also, her staged chibi work is just beautiful.
